Kler met us and walked us over to the Capuchin crypt, where the bone arrangements are extraordinary close up. Then the coach took us out to the catacombs. Morbid and fascinating in equal measure.

Easy to find the group at the metro, and from there straight out to the Rome catacombs. Getting underground out of the August heat was its own reward. Packed with history without ever dragging.

We took the 9:30 departure with Alessandra. Knees and shoulders really are checked at the crypt, so dress for it. Blissfully cool inside during the heatwave.

Interesting, and a welcome change from the heat. Worth knowing there are no bone crypts in the Rome catacombs themselves, so check that before you book if that is what you are picturing.

The meeting point is not where the coach actually parks, so there is a walk to reach it. Worth knowing on a hot day. The guide herself was lovely.
